Registration of Death
Deaths are registered in person by appointment at the Registrar’s office in the district in which the death occurred.
The doctor’s surgery or hospital will advise you when the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death has been sent electronically to the Registrars Office. If the death occurred in Northamptonshire, please ring the Registrar or go online to book an appointment as follows:
- Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough & East Northants Districts
- North Northamptonshire 0300 126 3000 and www.northnorthants.gov.uk
- Daventry, Northampton & South Northants Districts
- West Northamptonshire 0300 126 7000 and www.westnorthants.gov.uk

Certificates
The Registrar will issue a ‘Green Form’ for burial or cremation which we will require to allow the funeral to take place. The Registrar will ask you how many Death Certificates you require at £11.00 each (these are required for administrating an estate and on average 3-6 copies are requested). These certificates will be given to you at your registration appointment.
Deaths Referred to the Coroner
If the death has been referred to the Coroner, the Coroner will contact you to confirm that they have completed the paperwork following which you can then ring the registrar or go online to book an appointment.
Tell Us Once Service
This is an optional, but very useful service. The Registrar will take information from you to allow you to access the service which notifies all relevant central and local government departments about the person who has died. One simple phone call or by giving information online will avoid the need to contact many individual government and council departments. It deals with matters including: State Pension, Benefits, Council Tax, HM Revenue, Passports, Driving Licence, Blue Badge, Bus Passes, Library Cards, Electoral Service etc. The Registrar will give you a unique reference number to do this online at www.gov.uk/tell-us-once (you have 28 days to log on to the website) or they will give you a phone number to call if you prefer.
